Article 51 of the Constitution of the Republic of Cuba, related
below, is fictitious. Any similarity to other democratic and respected in real
life Constitutions, is entirely
coincidental and unintentional:
Article 51:
Everyone has the right to education. This right is guaranteed by the free and
widespread system of schools, semi-boarding and boarding schools and
scholarships of all kinds and at all levels of education and because of the
fact that all educational material is provided free of charge, which gives all
children and young people, regardless of their family’s economic position, the
opportunity to study in keeping with their ability, social demands and the
needs of socioeconomic development. Adults are also guaranteed this right;
education for them is free of charge and with the specific facilities regulated
by law, by means of the adult education program, technical and vocational
education, training courses in state agencies and enterprises and the advanced
courses for workers.
It's not free an "Education" that
forces children in their schools, who begin their studies, to lie daily,
saying: "We will be like Che"; being required to join the Cuban
Pioneers' Union, with the false slogan "Pioneers for Communism";
being committed while in elementary school, to attend as many indoctrination
political activities are called.
And all that regardless whether students and / or
parents like it or not; given the threat of staining their school records and
the subsequent impossibility of obtaining scholarships for posterior studies.
When I entered the Secondary School in 1966, I was forced to comply with 45
days each year, in the so-called School in the Field; whose sole purpose was to
work in order to pay in agricultural activities, the "Masked and cynical
Free Education". If I did not fulfill that requirement I could not
continue my studies. Meanwhile, our parents had to do voluntary work every
Sunday, belong to the CDR, pay quote, do night guards, engage in every activity
type in support of the regime, or they could adversely affect our scholarship
selection. Until very recently, the
pre-university in Cuba, was only in the field, separating the young people
between 15 and 18 years from their parents, when the formative family values
are more critical than ever. In the morning students received lessons and in
the afternoon they worked in agricultural activities with standtards to fulfill,
thus paying in a disguised way their education. The
choice of a good college career was limited to a good record of
"revolutionary". "University was for revolutionaries" (and
those pretending to be). For the least "Revolutionaries" and bad
simulators the least preferred careers were left. Parents also paid their
share, participating in all the activities designed by the regime, from blood
donations, "voluntary" work, and renunciation of a day's pay, to the integration
in evil dictatorial organizations such as Committees for the Defense and
territorial militia to cover the high price of a poor "indoctrinated
education." In universities, not joining revolutionary
activities, or not joining the productive work in the field in the summer,
after giving up a month's holiday, meant to graduate with a poor record, it
would be crucial for future job selection. The "revolutionary"
discipline and to obey, or at least show agreement with "socialist ideology" was
mandatory, otherwise the student was in trouble that caused many expulsions;
and broke off many dreams and aspirations, because they had to graduate in specialties
not related to their vocation. After college career, you have to work for free a month in Construction
or agriculture; plus two years of social service wherever the Revolution needs
you, with the lowest imaginable salary for a professional. And finally, the
average salary will be between $ 15 to $ 30; forcing you to choose between
living as a slave with double standards, and find another part-time job to
survive, or hang the title and apply for some Self-Employment to progress a
little. This sad situation forces to choose Internationalist Missions, becoming
Goods and / or Political Mercenary as in Venezuela, far from your family and
risking your life across the third world, among diseases and violence; that is
why many times defection compels you to change vocation for freedom. To be continued...
